Last War: Survival — Beginner Strategy Guide

A practical guide to get your base off the ground fast, avoid common early mistakes, and know where to spend your Diamonds wisely.

1Rush your Headquarters first

The single biggest beginner mistake is upgrading every building evenly. Your Headquarters (HQ) level gates almost everything else in the game — troop tiers, building caps, and research. Prioritize HQ upgrades above all else, especially in your first few weeks.

New troop tiers unlock at specific HQ levels — notably HQ 10, 13, 17, 20 and 24. Reaching these thresholds is what actually makes your army stronger, not spreading resources across secondary buildings.

2Join an active alliance early

Last War is built around large-scale alliance wars, not just solo base building. Joining an active alliance early gives you resource gifts, protection from raids, and access to alliance tech that a solo player simply cannot get on their own.

3Focus your hero investment

Don't spread hero upgrade materials thin across everyone you unlock. Pick 2-3 core heroes and commit to them — spreading resources across too many heroes early on is a common way to waste weeks of progress.

4Use Secret Task truck runs wisely

The Secret Task radar missions send trucks out to gather loot — and you can also plunder other players' trucks for extra rewards. As a rule of thumb, prioritize plundering trucks that are carrying UR Hero Shards or Alliance resources; they're worth far more than the average haul.

5Know the two game layers

Last War combines two different play styles: the Arcade layer (Special Ops missions, where your hero runs forward through a lane shooting enemies and collecting multipliers) and the base-building/strategy layer (HQ, troops, alliance wars). Getting good at both is what separates fast progressors from everyone else.
